What can I say, I was watching cable (don’t ask what channel, too many to remember) when I came across this flick. I’m glad I stopped. I have a taste for good B-Movies, and this one fits the bill nicely. The recent glut of thrown together horror crap that the Sci-Fi Channel has been generating has left me a bit jaded for newer B-Movies (Battlestar Galactica and Ghost Hunters are great, but come on, how many movies about giant snakes are they going to make??) so this was a treat.  

The film reminded me of the classic “Sorority Babes in the Slime-ball Bowl-O-Rama” with its plot staple use of the “we’ll do whatever it takes to get into the sorority/fraternity” hook to get the victims… I mean college coeds, to spend the night in a haunted house. Of course the accidental murder of one of their professors, who just happens to practice black magic in his dungeon-like basement (how much do they pay professors at that college, he lived in a freaking mansion) adds the requisite ultra-evil doorway to hell that every fraternity and sorority hope to have for their initiations.  

When the action starts it is creative. The evil forces embodied in the form of Brad Dourif as the black arts using psycho professor find some unusual ways to do in our coeds, not just your typical hack and slash either. The director, Rolfe Kanefsky puts all of the budget on the screen with some good special effects that don’t depend only on CGI like many recent films. To add to  this, the female leads, Nectar Rose (the “ditzy blonde”) and Tiffany Shepis (the “bitchy brunette”) both play their roles perfectly and add extra dimensions to their characters that take them beyond the typical cardboard cut outs you might expect. Also, since it is set at Halloween, the cast spends most of the film in costumes that add humor to the male characters and sex appeal to the ladies (Nectar Rose in a playboy bunny type costume and Tiffany Shepis in a sexy space suit, Nuff said!).

 All and all I really liked this film a lot. This one is a keeper! I give “The Hazing” a 7 out of 10 for originality and proving that low budget doesn’t have to mean low quality.
